Celebrating Heritage: James Gamble Honoured with Ulster History Circle Blue Plaque

A new blue plaque in County Fermanagh is shining a light on one of the most influential business stories to emerge from Ireland. The Ulster History Circle has unveiled a commemorative plaque honouring James Gamble, the Fermanagh-born entrepreneur who co-founded P&G.
Installed in Enniskillen, where James Gamble was born in 1803, the plaque celebrates a remarkable entrepreneurial journey that began in rural Ulster and helped shape the global Procter & Gamble business, which today serves millions of consumers around the world through its portfolio of trusted household brands. For all of us at P&G UK, the recognition is a proud moment that highlights the enduring legacy of one of our founders and the values that continue to guide our business more than 180 years later.

James Gamble
James Gamble emigrated with his family from Northern Ireland to the United States in 1819, settling in Ohio. There, he met William Procter, an English-born candlemaker, and the pair would eventually become business partners after marrying sisters Olivia and Elizabeth Norris. Encouraged by their father-in-law Alexander Norris, the two men established Procter & Gamble in Cincinnati in 1837.
The founding of Procter & Gamble
What began as a small soap and candle business quickly grew into something far greater, and eventually into the P&G that has become a household name today.
Through hard work, innovation and a commitment to quality, Procter & Gamble built a reputation for creating products that improved everyday life for families. Those principles still sit at the heart of the company today.
From trusted household names to innovations designed to make daily routines simpler and more effective, P&G continues to build on the entrepreneurial spirit shown by James Gamble and William Procter nearly two centuries ago. While the company has evolved into a global organisation operating in more than 180 countries, its foundations remain rooted in integrity, innovation, value and care for consumers.
Why the Blue Plaque matters
The new plaque from the Ulster History Circle recognises not only Gamble’s business achievements, but also the connection between local heritage and global impact. It serves as a reminder that world-changing ideas and ambitions can begin anywhere, including in communities such as Enniskillen. It also perfectly encapsulates the P&G ethos – a global business putting products into local households and businesses.
Blue plaques have long played an important role in celebrating people whose contributions have shaped society, culture and industry. By commemorating James Gamble in this way, the Ulster History Circle is helping preserve an important chapter in Northern Ireland’s entrepreneurial history while inspiring future generations to think boldly about what is possible.
P&G’s legacy of innovation continues today
At P&G UK, we are proud of our company’s origins and the pioneering mindset that continues to define our teams today. Innovation remains central to everything we do, from developing products that meet evolving consumer needs to advancing sustainability goals and supporting communities across the UK and beyond.
The story of James Gamble is one of resilience and opportunity. Like many immigrants of his era, he faced uncertainty and hardship as he built a new life abroad. Yet through a strong work ethic and a sense of purpose, he helped create a business that has stood the test of time.
That entrepreneurial spirit remains deeply relevant today. Across P&G, our teams continue to look for new ways to solve everyday challenges, improve consumer experiences and create positive impact through our brands and operations. Whether through product innovation, responsible sourcing or community partnerships, the company’s mission remains focused on improving lives now and for generations to come. Just as James Gamble’s mission was all those years ago.
Across the UK and Ireland, P&G brands remain part of millions of households every day, supporting families through products designed to deliver performance, value and reliability. At P&G, superior product performance is delivered through a combination of deep consumer understanding, continuous innovation and better decision-making across the organisation. And behind those brands and products are teams of people committed to carrying forward the same ambitions that defined James Gamble’s early career.
The company also continues to invest in programmes that support education, equality and environmental progress, recognising that long-term success is built not only through innovation, but through making a positive contribution to society. P&G believes that consumer value improves when better decisions are made consistently and at scale across product, packaging, communication and retail execution. This is a philosophy that connects the company’s past with its future ambitions, globally.
Celebrating a Global Legacy with Roots in Northern Ireland
The unveiling of the plaque in Enniskillen offers an opportunity to reflect not only on the company’s history, but also on the individuals whose vision helped shape it. James Gamble’s journey from Fermanagh to co-founding one of the world’s best-known consumer goods companies is an extraordinary story of perseverance and innovation.
As visitors and residents pause to read the plaque in Enniskillen, we hope it encourages pride in the area’s rich history and inspires future entrepreneurs to pursue ideas that could make a difference around the world. For P&G UK, it is a meaningful tribute to one of our founders and a celebration of the enduring values that continue to guide the company today.
