We emphasize doing this responsibly because we understand that what is "renewable" today, may not be tomorrow if our collective actions are not focused on preservation.

Our Work: Renewable Energy

Energy from biomass

100% of the steam and up to 60-70% of the total energy needed to make Bounty and Charmin at one of our largest global manufacturing facilities will come from scrap wood—tree limbs, tree tops, discarded wood, even pecan shells.

Located in Albany, GA., and opening in 2017, the 50 MW biomass facility took more than two years and dozens of partnerships to make it a reality.

The facility will be built and operated by Constellation, and will generate additional power for local utility, Georgia Power. All wood used for the project will be sustainably collected locally following procurement standards we developed with external NGO partners.

Electricity from Wind, Solar and Water

  • 100% wind electricity helps run our Taicang Hair Care Plant in China, where we make Head & Shoulders, Pantene and Rejoice
  • In Xiqing, China, our Beauty Plant uses geothermal electricity to provide 15% of the facilities overall electricity needs
  • Effective April 1, 2016, 100% of the electricity that runs our Gillette plant in Mexico will come from wind electricity
  • Our Pampers plant in Poland runs on 100% electricity

Our Work: Renewable Materials

Sustainable Forestry

The world’s forests play a huge role in supporting virtually all life on earth. The good news is they’re one of our most renewable resources. But, in a world of increasing population and economic well-being, the world’s forests are under increasing pressure. This is especially true in the tropical regions where deforestation and loss of high-conservation-value areas are already occurring.

At P&G we have identified three strategic commodities where our sourcing practices can have the greatest impact on ensuring responsible use of the world’s forest resources:

  • Wood pulp for tissue and absorbent hygiene products
  • Wood pulp used in paper packaging
  • Palm oil, palm kernel and their derivatives for our laundry and beauty products (see a dedicated section on this below)

We began working in forestry preservation more than 45 years ago to ensure sustainable production of our Charmin, Bounty and Puffs brands. This is also when we began employing registered foresters and actively managing forest resources.

Palm Oil & Palm Kernel Oil

We are unequivocally committed to zero deforestation in our palm supply chain.

Palm Oil is a highly efficient natural resource, requiring 10 times less land than other oil-producing crops and can be harvested year round. It is also one of the world’s most versatile raw materials, included in about half of all products we find in grocery stores today, according to the not-for-profit organization Green Palm.

As a consumer of palm oil (P&G uses less than 1% of worldwide production of palm materials), we demand that what we buy is sustainably grown and harvested.

We achieved the goal we set in April 2014 to establish traceability of palm oil and palm kernel oil to supplier mills and are on track to ensure no deforestation in our palm supply by 2020.

In January 2016, we signed a memorandum of understanding with Felda Global Ventures Holdings Bhd (FGV) and five other organizations to develop a model to ensure sustainable sourcing of palm oil.

As we are committed to establishing full traceability for all palm materials we buy, we launched in 2014 a large-scale program that touches all fronts of the palm supply chain – including working with small farmers to improve their practices. Ours is a three-pillar approach:

  • Work with all our suppliers to source RSPO-certified materials, establishing traceably supply chain with zero deforestation by 2020.
  • Work with small farmers (holders), industry experts and academia to improve productivity and the lives of small farmers who are an important part of our supply chain.
  • Work to develop and align industry standards and practices for sustainable palm supply chains.
  • This is a complex challenge, for us and the entire industry. By working in partnership with top experts, NGOs and industry experts, we aim to make a positive difference.
